Rocca di Angera

The Rocca di Angera is one of the best preserved medieval fortresses in Italy and one of the most complete attractions on Lake Maggiore.

Located on a rocky spur overlooking the Lombardy side of the lake, the Rocca is not just a panoramic castle but a true historical and museum complex, made up of several buildings constructed between the Middle Ages and the seventeenth century.

Today, owned by the Borromeo family, it offers a rich itinerary through frescoed halls, historical collections, a doll and toy museum, and medieval gardens, making it one of the most structured and comprehensive visits in the area.

What to see at Rocca di Angera

The visit is more complex than many other attractions on Lake Maggiore. It is not just a castle, but a journey through architecture, art, and collections.

The castle structure

The Rocca consists of five main sections, including the Castellana Tower, the Visconti wing, and the Borromeo wing, built between the eleventh and seventeenth centuries.
This architectural layering is one of the most interesting aspects of the visit.

The Hall of Justice

One of the most important rooms, featuring a cycle of thirteenth century frescoes, among the best preserved in Lombardy.
They depict the victory of Ottone Visconti in the battle of Desio and represent the historical core of the fortress.

Historic rooms and collections

The route leads through decorated interiors with frescoes, furniture, and artworks that reflect the transformation from military fortress to noble residence.

Doll and Toy Museum

One of the most surprising collections, with over one thousand items including dolls and toys from the eighteenth century to today.
It is one of the most important collections of its kind in Europe and makes the visit particularly interesting for families.

The medieval garden

Outside, there is a reconstructed medieval garden with medicinal plants, aromatic herbs, and traditional crops from the period.

The panoramic view

From the towers and terraces, you can enjoy a 360 degree view over Lake Maggiore and the Prealps, one of the most spectacular in the entire area.

The history of Rocca di Angera

The Rocca has very ancient origins and was originally built as a strategic fortress to control trade routes on the lake.

  • The first structures date back at least to the eleventh century
  • Between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries it was expanded under the Visconti rule
  • In 1449 it passed to the Borromeo family, who still own it today

Over the centuries, the fortress gradually transformed from a military stronghold into a noble residence, enriched with decorated rooms and artistic collections. Today it stands as a rare example of a perfectly preserved castle that tells the evolution of the territory from the Middle Ages to the modern age.
