Alpinia Botanical Garden

The Alpinia Botanical Garden is an alpine botanical garden located in the area of Alpino, above Stresa, on the slopes of Mottarone, at about 800 meters above sea level. Covering approximately 40,000 square meters and hosting over 1,000 plant species, it is one of the main examples of an alpine garden in Italy.

Its uniqueness lies in the combination of botanical collection and panoramic location, making it a natural terrace overlooking Lake Maggiore and the Borromean Islands.

What to see at Alpinia Botanical Garden

The visit follows a path through flowerbeds, rocks, and terraces, with a more natural layout compared to traditional ornamental gardens.

Collection of alpine and international plants

The garden hosts more than 1,000 species, mainly alpine and subalpine, but also plants from the Caucasus, China, Japan, and the Americas.
Among the most representative are gentians, bellflowers, medicinal plants, and typical high altitude species.

Botanical path through terraces

The route develops along natural paths with gentle slopes, organized into thematic sections. It is not a formal garden. The experience is closer to a walk in a controlled mountain environment.

Panoramic viewpoint over Lake Maggiore

One of the highlights is the panoramic viewpoint, offering an open view over the Borromean Gulf and the Alps. It is one of the best viewpoints above Stresa.

How the visit to the Alpinia Botanical Garden works

The visit is self guided, with a clear but not rigidly structured path.

  • Average duration: 1 to 2 hours
  • Natural terrain paths
  • Presence of slight uphill sections
  • Comfortable shoes recommended

It is not a “spectacular” visit like the Borromean Islands. It is quieter, more natural, and more contemplative.

Entrance is paid and the approximate prices are:

  • Full ticket: €5.00
  • Reduced ticket: about €4.50
