Santa Claus Cave 2025 - Ornavasso
The Santa Claus Cave in Ornavasso is one of the most enchanting Christmas events in Piedmont, attracting thousands of families every year in search of an authentic experience. Surrounded by the forests of the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola area, this event combines nature, shows, traditions and scenic installations that transform Ornavasso into a large Christmas village at the foot of the mountains.
Visiting the Cave means experiencing an emotional journey that begins right in the town center and continues through panoramic little trains, illuminated paths, elves, craftsmen, concerts, and light installations, ending with the encounter with Santa Claus inside the historic marble quarry, from which stone was once extracted for the Milan Cathedral.
A nature-filled path between lights and installations
One of the most fascinating parts of the experience is the walk that leads from the center of Ornavasso to the Elf Village. You can go up using the Renna Express Trains, operating all day long, or follow a path through woods and Alpine landscapes.
Along the way, you will find light installations, photo spots, and the first themed areas dedicated to the Twergi, the local elves.
Halfway along the route, you reach the Chiesa della Guardia, one of the FAI “Places of the Heart”, where a large Bergamasque nativity scene is displayed, complete with day–night effects, water, and snow. The church also hosts art exhibitions and covered areas for a panoramic break.
The Elf Village: shows, concerts, and covered areas
Once you arrive at the Village, the atmosphere becomes even more captivating. Among the main attractions you will find:
- The Castle of Lights, featuring a live concert with songs from the most beloved Disney movies.
- The Christmas Show by the Cave’s elves, a performance renewed each year with new scenic designs.
- The Toy Factory, a covered and heated area where visitors can meet woodworkers, honey producers, cheesemakers, crochet artists, and patchwork artisans.
- The demonstration “This is how cheese is made”, featuring live curd preparation at scheduled times.
- The mechanical reindeer, a favorite among children, along with numerous themed photo spots.
All these areas are indoors and heated, perfect even in cold or snowy weather.
Panoramic viewpoints and attractions for the whole family
Continuing along the path, you reach several highly scenic areas:
- The Twergi Belvedere, overlooking Lake Mergozzo and the Val Grande National Park.
- The Talking Trees, telling Christmas stories and forest legends.
Santa Claus’s Flying Sleigh, a panoramic attraction suitable for all ages.
The entire route is also accessible with strollers (an alternative paved path is available).
The meeting with Santa Claus inside the Cave
The most anticipated moment is entering the real Santa Claus Cave, an ancient 30-meter-high marble quarry.
After walking through an underground section decorated with music and installations, you reach the Marble Hall, where Santa Claus welcomes children, collects their letters, and gives each visitor a small gift.
An official photographer takes the souvenir picture: one family print is included with the ticket, while additional portraits or digital files can be purchased at the exit.
What to see after the Cave: nativity scenes and Christmas motorboats
The experience can continue with two other very popular activities:
- A Thousand Nativity Scenes from Around the World, located in the Crypt of the Sanctuary of Boden, with over 1,200 nativity scenes from all over the world.
- The Christmas Motorboats from Baveno to Isola dei Pescatori, among lights, festive flavors, and a suggestive evening cruise on Lake Maggiore.
Both activities can easily be combined with a visit to the Cave.
Who is the Santa Claus Cave of Ornavasso recommended for?
