How to get to Mottarone
Mottarone is one of the most popular panoramic destinations on Lake Maggiore. Located between Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta, it offers spectacular views that, on clear days, extend as far as the Alps and the Po Valley. Getting there is fairly straightforward, although the best option depends on your starting point and chosen means of transport. Below you will find all the useful and up-to-date information on how to reach Mottarone.
How to get to Mottarone by car
Travelling by car is the most convenient way to reach the summit of Mottarone, especially if you are travelling with family or would like to have full freedom of movement once you arrive.
From Stresa, follow the well-signposted panoramic road leading up to Mottarone, which takes about 30–40 minutes. The road is winding but offers beautiful views over Lake Maggiore. During winter, it is advisable to check road conditions in advance and to carry snow chains or winter tyres in case of snowfall.
From Milan, the easiest route is via the A8 motorway towards Gravellona Toce, exiting at Carpugnino or Baveno/Stresa, then continuing towards Mottarone. The average travel time is around one and a half hours, traffic permitting.
Reaching Mottarone from Turin by car is also simple and takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, depending on traffic. The recommended route is to take the A4 Turin–Milan motorway towards Milan and then continue on the A26 Genoa–Gravellona Toce towards Gravellona Toce. The most convenient exit is Baveno/Stresa, from where you follow signs to Stresa and then to Mottarone.
Near the summit there are parking areas that provide easy access to viewpoints, restaurants and green areas.
How to get to Mottarone by train and public transport
Reaching Mottarone by public transport requires a bit more planning, but it is possible. Trains run to Stresa railway station, which is well connected to Milan and the main cities of northern Italy. Once in Stresa, however, there is no continuous direct connection to the summit of Mottarone.
At certain times of the year, tourist buses or seasonal services operate, but it is always advisable to check timetables and availability in advance. Alternatively, especially during the high season, a combination of train and taxi can be a practical solution.
Getting to Mottarone in winter
During winter, Mottarone is a popular destination for snow, scenic walks and outdoor activities. At this time of year, it is important to keep a few practical aspects in mind:
- always check the condition of the roads before departure
- make sure you have appropriate winter equipment if travelling by car
- check the opening status of lifts and facilities at higher altitudes
In case of adverse weather conditions, access may be limited or not recommended.
